The movement demanded changes in education to include the history and culture of Mexicans, agitated for political opportunity, and promoted mexicanidad, or "Mexican-ness." Leaders of the movement and demonstrations by Chicanos were met with violence and murder by the police and Texas Rangers. They rejected the term Mexican American as assimilationist and a means of "Whitening" and referred to themselves Chicano/a, a term that had previously been used as a slur.
